I love to see the squirrels enjoying themselves in my garden as they leap from branch to branch in the trees especially in my prized Indian Bean Tree – they look so cute. But when it comes to my pots of bulbs it is an entirely different matter. I have one that I call Squiggy, he cheekily sits on the edge of the pot throwing out all the soil until he finds his prize – my bulbs. Sometimes I wonder if he is trying to help reorganise my pots as he takes from one and drops in another. I have just got my lawn looking reasonably decent but I know he will be along in time to bury his nuts!!
He also likes to raid the bird food table and shows off by swinging with his tail from the perch. He is now getting quite brave and ventures as far as the French windows to see what I am up to.
- Covering newly planted bulbs and plants with wire mesh.
- Giving them a spray of water (not when there is hose pipe ban).
- Protect the bird table.
- I have tried sprinkling hot chilli pepper on to the soil (I think my squirrels have now acquired a passion for something hot).
- There are chemical repellents available.
