Narcissi Mixed

This time of year my daffodils or to give them their botanical name Narcissus, are past their best. This season the weather in the Spalding area has been particularly unkind and my plants have taken quite a battering. So I’m very keen to try to restore the bulbs energy so they can go on  for many years looking fabulous . This is how I look after my daffodils.

Once past their best I nip the flowers off at the neck behind the seedpod. I then water and feed once a week with a high potash (potassium) fertilizer for about a month. Best advice is that you should never cut the foliage from the bulbs. Wait until it starts going yellow (usually about two months later ) then pull it off. Some people like to tie up their foliage to keep it tidy but it’s not something I worry about.

I’m told you should also keep the soil surface around the foliage well hoed to prevent the entry of Narcissus fly. Some people like to lift their daffodil bulbs but mine stay in all year round.

Each year I like to try and add a few more. I have already seen a couple of new ones in the Autumn Spalding Plant and Bulb catalogue that I will be planting. These are the Narcissus Sinopel a lovely fragrant daffodil with a sparkling white perianth and apple –green cup edged in brilliant yellow. Plus the wonderfully named Narcissus Popeye. With its sparkling white petals and beautiful yellow and white trumpet. Ok I admit it, I’m getting it just for the name Popeye! I also want to get some more orange coloured ones into the garden so I will be planting Spalding’s Narcissus Flower Power mix which will give me that lovely double with orange colour!
