Wow! What an overwhelming response. Here in South Lincolnshire we are passionate about our spring bulbs, after all, we grow up with them all around us. However, it turns out the whole of the UK loves them too!
Congratulation to all our winners, we cannot wait to see and hear about your spring floral displays this time next year! There will be many mini Keukenhofs around the UK. The countdown began with one of my favourites, The Tulip Regenboog mix, the lucky winner was Christine Field. On the 11th we saw a pack of Hyacinth Dutch mix go to Liz down in Essex. Eva snapped up the Charming Beauty tulips on the 12th.
The only narcissi bulbs on offer during the countdown have been won by Hilda, congratulations. With narcissi ‘Flower Power’ you get a real feel of spring in the garden. These mixed narcissi create a real feel of spring. The centre ring of petals consists of a crown of alternating orange and yellow petals with an outer layer of yellow petals.
The Narcissus ‘Flower Power’ mix bulbs can remain in the same spot for years. Deadhead the faded flowers and this will direct the energy back into the bulb. For a healthy growth, we recommend sprinkling Bakker’s universal fertilizer around the base of the leaves immediately after the flowering period. ‘Flower Power’ will provide you with an abundance of flowers again the following spring.
The Exotic Wave went to Mrs Jury on the 14th. Our top seller, the Ice Cream Tulip was won by Penny over in the eastern county of Suffolk. The flowers really are exceptional. The petals in the middle are pure white and they are surrounded by outer petals of a deep-pink colour tinged with green. The centre has a double ring of petals and when these tulips open in full sunlight, they resemble the peony.
The crocus Blue Pearl will be planted in Junes Garden. Dancing their way to Southampton will be the Tulip Lambada, well done Jan! The late flowering ‘Lambada’ tulip is a new late variety with very unusual flowers on very sturdy stems. The fringed petals give the impression of frosting! The flower colours of canary yellow to orange are really stunning. The Tulips Angelique, a pretty pastel coloured spring delight will be heading north from us here in Spalding. Finally for the countdown we have the Candy Club Tulips, they will take centre stage in Michelle’s boarder next spring.
The 20th of March 2015! OPEN DAY! We see five packs of Vincent Van Gogh tulips heading out all round the UK. Finally, the spring has sprung!!
